Framingham, March 14, 2024. A full house of more than 300 people came together to celebrate the impact of the MetroWest YMCA, make some very special announcements, honor the memory of Rick Hoyt, and present their annual Inspiration Awards.
Following a passionate and personal description of the impact of the Y, Reverend Emmett G. Price, III announced that the MetroWest Y would be receiving $5,000,000 in Congressionally Directed Federal funding for a future regional Early Learning Center, as a key component of a new regional YMCA that will serve Ashland, Holliston, Hopkinton, Sherborn, Framingham, and beyond. The news was met with a standing ovation and was followed by videos from Senator Markey, Senator Warren, and Congressman McGovern echoing this excitement and talking about the importance of Early Learning/Child care programs throughout the region and the country.
According to Rick MacPherson, President & CEO of the MetroWest YMCA,
“Working with the teams of Senator Warren, Senator Markey, and Congressman McGovern to secure this $5 Million in federal funding for the MetroWest Community has been an honor and we are very grateful. This funding is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of our YMCA Team, our MetroWest Legislative Delegation and town leaders from Ashland, Hopkinton, Framingham, Sherborn, and Holliston, as well as the unwavering support of our community partners. The Regional Y Early Learning Center will serve as a resource for countless children and families in our community, providing access to quality early education and care that will shape futures and change lives for generations to come.”
“This $5 million is an important investment in the YMCA’s long-held vision of providing a safe, supportive space for all families in MetroWest,” said Senator Edward J. Markey. “Together, we can nurture the mind, body, and spirit of our youth—all in service of a healthier, more just, and more accessible community. I am grateful for my federal partners in Senator Warren and Congressman McGovern, the steady hand of the MetroWest YMCA, the region’s state legislative delegation and municipal leaders, and our non-profit and private partners, all of whom have played a vital role in the success of this project.”
“As a new mom, if I had an option like the MetroWest YMCA’s Early Learning Center for good quality, affordable child care, it would’ve changed my life,” said Senator Warren. “Child care is part of the basic infrastructure of our nation, and the $5 million we’ve secured is going to invest in the next generation, and also show them what it looks like for government to work for families.”
“I am so excited to have partnered with Senators Markey and Warren to secure $5 million in federal funding to help the MetroWest Y realize their dream of constructing a regional early learning center,” said Congressman James P. McGovern. “This investment in young people in places like Holliston, Hopkinton and Ashland is going to set kids up for success, and I’m so grateful to have had a role in building that future for our neighbors and for our communities.”
Following a meaningful and emotional tribute in memory of Rick Hoyt by Dave McGillivray and Tim Kilduff, Rick MacPherson announced to the family and those in attendance, that the new regional Y would be named in memory and honor of the Hoyt Family and Team Hoyt.
According to MacPherson, “It was an honor to announce at our MetroWest YMCA Marathon Community Breakfast that the Future Regional YMCA serving Ashland, Hopkinton, Holliston, Framingham, and Sherborn will be named in honor of Rick and Dick Hoyt, and the Hoyt family also known as "Team Hoyt." The Hoyts have been cherished friends of the MetroWest YMCA for many years, offering unwavering support to all of our community endeavors. By participating in numerous marathons, triathlons, and other endurance events together, Rick and Dick have raised awareness about inclusion and the abilities of people with disabilities. Their message of "Yes, you can" has resonated deeply with people from all walks of life, encouraging others to overcome obstacles and pursue their dreams regardless of challenges they may face. I am thankful to know that the Hoyt family's legacy will continue to resonate through the walls of the newly named Regional YMCA for thousands of children and families to experience.”
Finally, in a celebration of determination, passion and compassion, the MetroWest Y presented its annual Inspiration Awards. Dave McGillivray, Russ Hoyt and Becca Pizzi presented the awards to Team Unstoppable, a Team Hoyt Duo made up of Kyle Brodeur and Mike DiDonato, and to hockey legend Zdeno Chara, who ran for Team Hoyt during the 2023 Boston marathon and has made his mark on the marathon world in the past year.
The honorees shared their journeys and their appreciation for the honor and for the support of those around them. Both also referenced the impact of the Hoyt Family on their lives.
The MetroWest YMCA’s Marathon Community Breakfast celebrates the Y’s Marathon Charity Team, Kicks off the organization’s annual campaign, and honors those who have and continue to inspire us all through their athletic achievements and willingness to give back to their community and make a difference.
